Robbie Rivera, born in 1973 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, had his first
encounter with music when he was only 10-years-old. Buying records from
acts like New Order, Depeche Mode and U2, it wasn’t long before he
started spinning records. It was the disco sampled cut “Nothing To
Offer” that lead to an endless string of productions that were released
on established labels like Subliminal, Filtered, Positiva,
Mos, Azuli and Strictly Rhythm. Following this success, in 1998, Robbie
alongside wife, Monica Olabarrieta, founded the world-renowned label
Juicy Music.

Rivera’s distinctive brand of sexy, pounding,
dirty, electro-tinged house music ignites dance-floors across the globe.
Throughout the years Robbie’s musical stylings have lead to a strong
collection of dance floor favorites attached to his name. Going back to
2002 Rivera released a collaboration with the just starting Axwell
entitled “Burning”. The track garnered universal praise and set the
stage for his 2003 hit “BANG”, reaching Top 10 on the UK charts, used in
the Sydney Olympics, and selling 500,000 copies. But, perhaps Robbie’s
biggest track to date would be the worldwide smash “Funkatron”, a track
cited as an influence to many of today’s house classics. These tracks
are only limited highlights in an illustrious career that as well
include the hits “Back To Zero” and “Girlfriend” and remixes of tracks
by top artists such as Tiesto, Madonna, David Guetta, Kaskade, Deadmau5,
Armin Van Buuren, and Roger Sanchez.

Outside of the studio,
Robbie is no stranger to a heavy touring schedule. Rivera’s music
regularly packs dance floors around the globe. But the jewel in Rivera’s
crown is his label, Juicy Music. Juicy Music’s roster includes artists
as diverse as: Antoine Clamaran, Coburn, Superchumbo, Mark Knight, David
Guetta, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Stonebridge, and emerging
talent, such as Willie Morales, Paul Harris, Louie Padilla, Rooster
& Peralta, and DMS12.

Since 2005, Rivera and his wife and
business partner, Monica, have been the driving forces behind the
world-renown Juicy Beach party at WMC in Miami each March. The 17-hour
events at Nikki Beach Club attract a cast of over 7,500 clubbers as well
as A-list DJs, and the party has gone on to become one of the week's
most successful events. Likewise, the Juicy Ibiza parties in Ibiza
welcome up to 6,000 clubbers to Amnesia’s beautiful terrace and are
sponsored by Armani Exchange. In addition to the live element of the
brand, Juicy as well encompasses Robbie’ highly syndicated radioshow,
The Juicy Show, featuring today’s top guest DJs such as Laidback Luke,
Benny Benassi, and Alex Gaudino.

With a stream of world-class remixes and releases, Dillon Francis has caught the attention of some of the top players in club land, including Steve Aoki, Diplo, Will I. Am, Drop The Lime, Sinden and Tittsworth to name some. In less than a year his blistering productions have been heavily supported by Major Lazer, who opened their show with “Westside!,” a Dutch House-flavored monster that was consistently rinsed by top djs on both sides of the pond, including Sinden and Steve Aoki. The tune is finally seeing a proper release on Diplo’s Mad Decent label, where Dillon will be releasing his “Masta Blasta” EP as well in the near future. From his first dubstep release on Play Me Records, the heavy “Take Me High” peaked at No. 13 on the Beatport dubstep chart and was played in full by Rusko in every one of his sets for his current OMG tour. At ease behind the turntables and in the studio, in the electro world and in dubstep, Dillon is what you would call an open-format electronic dj who sees no delineation between making music and playing it. He has gotten huge support from the most important dance music blogs (Dim Mak, Mad Decent, Discobelle, Gotta Dance Dirty).

This Thursday, February 2: Insomniac & NightCulture present DILLON FRANCIS with DJ Orion and King Louie!

Get tickets here.

Hope you're caught up on sleep because it's time for Nocturnal Festival 2011. More than 40,000 people are expected to make their way outside of the Austin city limits to Alpine Pass this Friday and Saturday. With four stages and too many artists to count, this is yet another opportunity to discover a new favorite sound by accident. Walking through the surreal costumes and large-scale interactive art exhibits at 1:00 a.m. (the festival goes until 4:00 a.m. each day), you might hear something that resonates deeply. Find yourself in the music by taking a chance.

Festivals of this scale, however, don't occur by happenstance. Just ask Vincent Salvaggio. He's part of the Insomniac team behind Nocturnal (and the Electric Daisy Carnival among others) and also brings quite a few events to us here at Republic Live. While the art and stages in Alpine Pass take form, Vincent gave us some time to discuss Nocturnal Festival, the success of the Insomniac Sessions during SXSW, and stars.

Vincent, you must be busy getting ready for Nocturnal. This show is huge. How's the venue shaping up?

The place is definitely starting to take shape. We’ve been working since last Friday.

What are you looking forward to most at Nocturnal?

Wow, that is a hard question. There so many amazing acts, it’s hard to pick one. Can I pick 10? [laughs] I’m excited to see Ghostland Observatory play with all the lasers out in the woods.

It's at Apache Pass. Do people act differently at festivals outside of town?

I think so. The fresh air definitely does something to you. I see why people live out here. Not to mention the stars in the sky!

The Insomniac Sessions at Republic Live during SXSW were big. Acts like Moby, Steve Aoki, and Kaskade. You got any stories about that?

I think the highlight of the week was on Sunday night about 3:00 a.m. at the closing party...Skrillex and 12th Planet tag-teaming with Steve Aoki. It was one of Skrillex's first times mixing on CDJs. Then, to top it off, some of the Foo Fighters walk in to hang out.

Yeah, there’s a video of Kaskade that’s catching quite a buzz. Tell me about this video.

Wow, I think it speaks for itself. SXSW at its best.

What's it like working for Insomniac?

There is a lot more to it then people know. I don’t think most people realize that it takes a team of hundreds to make all these shows and festivals happen. It’s a huge team effort.

Have you ever been offered something outrageous in exchange for access to a party or an artist?

People offer some crazy stuff to be able to meet artists. We will just leave it at that.

You get to travel a lot? What's your favorite city?

Vegas or Miami...but for sure this year will be Vegas. We moved Electric Daisy Carnival to Vegas. Tickets went on sale Saturday. First day, 85k tickets sold. Need I say more? The biggest electronic show in America.

Whoa, 85,000 tickets? That’s sick. Alright, last question. Any new equipment you're excited to use?

Yes there’s this crazy art piece at Nocturnal. I cant wait to play with it.

Nocturnal Festival 2011 tickets and lineup

History and details of the festival

Inspired by mix tapes back in the early '90s, DJ Manny is now a name in Austin as well as the owner of The DJ Dojo.

How long have you owned “The DJ DOJO”? What inclined you to open the store?
DJ Dojo opened summer of 2004 with my partners DJ Bigface and Claude 9. We closed doors in late 2008 so that we could focus on our Artistry and Music projects. I re-opened in the late summer of 2010 with the idea of having more flexible hours and giving personal classes by appointment only. Now I can still go to my other studios, and I have solid time to produce without any stress of having a "store".

What has been your favorite show so far?
My favorite has been the New Years Party in Los Angeles. I have done it for 3 years in a row,and it's a private party for some really good Austin friends. They own a beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills. The party goers are a mixed group from Austin and Los Angeles creating a party full of not only fun people but characters.

Give us a sneak peek of what to expect for your show during SXSW (Red Bull BPM) at Republic Live.
Working on the Red Bull BPM has been amazing. I always enjoy the challenge of performing with new toys. I have had less than two weeks with the new application, and I've been talking to the team of programmers in Germany about the software. Now I'm basically a beta tester for the team. I get up at 9:00 a.m. to talk to the people in Germany (where it's 6:00 p.m.) to tell them about the application.

BPM is made for anyone that likes the DJ culture ranging from the most advanced DJ to the dancers.

I am going to play a little bit of everything, tweak the hell out of the iPAD and have a good time!

Do you like being a DJ in Austin? Do you see yourself staying in the city?
YES and YES, I love our DJ scene here. We have amazing artist here that know and connect with the rest of the DJ culture world wide. I am lucky enough to travel to the west coast and east coast every year. I love living close to downtown, everything is so accessible and simple. I will always have a home here

What are your goals as an artist?
To create and perform.

Where do you want to be career wise in the next 5 years?
I really like where my career has been the last 5 years: giving DJ classes, being a DJ around town and making more music. I feel like a the turtle in the race. I am going slow but is a healthy pace to goal!

Anything you would like to add?
Austin, we have lift off!!

With a background in music and radio, Rick McNulty and partner Ellen Stader are blowing up Austin with RubyRico Productions to become the "best party in town"

What inspired you to start RubyRico productions?
Ellen and I found that we both loved '70s funk music. We thought we'd make a good production team with Ellen's background in dance and mine in music and radio. We theorized that if we combined our talents, we could produce some provocative and over-the-top shows.

How did you meet Ellen Stader?
On a dark and stormy night at a posh Austin bar. She was dark and I was stormy, and we didn't get along at first until she brazenly insulted my taste in shoes.

Give us a little background about your career. Where you started, how you got to where you are now?
I am a lapsed musician who was better on the radio than on the guitar. I did college radio in Los Angeles, Bloomington, Indiana and Chicago (you might say I bounced around a bit). I actually came to Austin to get away from the music business, which is slightly ironic when you consider this town. It wasn't long before I fell into a gig at KOOP radio and KUT, both which feed my biological imperative to turn people on to great music.

What has been your favorite show so far?
Our Tom Waits Peepshow was our favorite for a long time, but the new Good Foot production has become the absolute favorite in terms of sheer pleasure.

How did you decide on Republic Live as a venue for The Good Foot?
Republic Live is ideal for the staging of this show: the lights, sound and go-go platforms for our dancers. When we wanted to do a Mardi Gras show, we wanted to be downtown smack dab in the middle of the madness and Republic Live is as close to action as we want to be.

How did you put together The Good Foot: A Mardi Gras Funk Party?
We'd been toying with the idea of a live Soul Train-styled dance party with a live band (The Sugarfoot Family All-Stars). When we mixed in the dance squad (The Sugarfoot Hustlers), we knew we really had something. For Mardi Gras we've added a brass band (The Austin Knights Brass Band) and the coup de grace was the addition of a real Mardi Gras Indian Chief (Big Chief Kevin Goodman). All together, it's somewhere between a live radio performance and a live episode of Soul Train with a million Mardi Gras beads.

How long does it typically take to organize a show before it is ready to perform?
We worked on this one for the better part of last year and officially road-tested it on the east side of Austin on New Year's Eve. There are so many moving parts to our productions that it takes a long time to get it all working together. A twelve-piece funk band combined with twelve dancers can consume a lot of beer and rehearsal time.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
There's talk about a film and cable pilot for some other ideas we've been working on. As for The Good Foot, we'd like to take it on the road for awhile, but the logistics are somewhat harrowing. If we continue to do this production in Austin, we'd like to see about having George Clinton & Company get on board. We'll see.

What are your goals at RubyRico Productions?
To continue the high-quality productions and proudly hold the banner of "the best party in town." It's our mission: Performances with depravity and style.

Anything you would like to add?
Come on down this Saturday and get on the Good Foot. It's quintessentially Austin in so many ways and it's the best party you'll go to all year long. Seriously.

Starting out as a promoter in Long Island, seven years later DJ NYCE has made a name in the entertainment world doing shows all over the country. Flying back and forth from New York, Miami, Las Vegas and Austin, DJ NYCE is here with some hot shows at Hudson on 5th and Republic Live in the next week!

Buy Tickets for NYE @ Republic Live

How long have you been doing Champagne Red Affair?

Four years if you include this year. I have done this party in New York, Las Vegas, Miami and now Austin. Every year the party has been very successful, so I would expect for this party to be the same way. It is a sexy party.

This year it is in Austin at Hudson on 5th, is there any more information on the party you would like to share?
Basically we will have playmates coming in for the party. They know how to have a good time, and they know what to expect from this party because of the past events I have done. Good vibe, good people, a very sexy, classy party. That is what I want to bring to the table with Champagne Red Affair.

So what is “Red” about the party?
I want people to wear red, you don’t have to but I would like it to get the whole holiday vibe. I will probably be wearing red, but we will see what happens.

What made you chose this location?
I wanted to try something different, currently I live in Austin. It should be a fun night, with a great crowd.

How long have you been a DJ?

For seven years. I was DJ-ing at this party one time and Grandmaster Flash (the first DJ to make turn tables an instrument) came up to me and was like "I really like your style and the way you present yourself". He said he wanted me to be a part of his DJ crew and I was like thank you. This was one of my big accomplishments. I mean he is the man and everyone wants to be him, he is one of the featured DJs on the game “DJ hero”.

I opened up for Diddy, Sean Paul, Busta Rhymes… mostly hip hop acts and even some house acts as well. I worked with mainly big name acts while I was in New York. I always did showcases with acts when I lived there as well, I have always had strong dedication to my work.

Where did you start out?
I was a promoter and lived in Long Island. Originally I am from Queens and moved out to Long Island. Then, I started to DJ in Long Island, did all the five bureaus in New York, headed up to Connecticut and Jersey. Next, I went down to Miami to do shows. Basically I would promote myself as a party, I knew how to do it and I had all the email contacts from being a promoter.

I started as a “bathroom DJ” which literally means being the DJ when the guy went to the bathroom. I was there to help out with equipment and set up and I would do two or three songs when he took a bathroom break. I learned a lot about being a DJ when helping out my friend, and I would go to his house and use his equipment. Then I decided to get my own equipment and my own vinyl records.

Do you like playing in Austin in comparison to other cities?
Ya I like doing shows in Austin, but I don't like that it closes down at 2 a.m. In other cities like New York and Miami, the bars and clubs are open until 3 or 4 in the morning....sometimes even later. And Vegas is up all night! I like to do more than one show a night and when you have until 4 a.m., it is easier to make that happen.

You are going to DJ New Year’s Eve at Republic Live. What are your plans for such a big night?

I am double-booked on New Year’s. First I’m doing the show at Republic Live, then I will be heading out to do an after party. I like doing more than one party or venue a night whenever I get the chance.

When can we expect you back at Republic Live or Hudson? Anything booked in 2011 you are excited about?

I will be DJ-ing monthly at Hudson in the new year and I am working on booking some shows at Republic also.

Oh, I have just been invited back to Miami in March for WMC (Winter Music Conference) a big conference where DJ’s from all over the world come out to party and show their talent. You are in the eyes of some big time people. This will be my third year to do this, it is like South by Southwest for DJ’s. The party goes on for a week, and I recommend that everyone who loves music should go at least once in their lifetime.

Anything you would like to tell your fans?

Thank you. I try to keep in touch on facebook and twitter. I like to stay personal with my fans, and let them know they mean a lot to me. Staying humble is the best thing, once you let it get to your head you lose sight of why you are doing this and how important your fan base is.

Chad and Dave arrived for the interview stoked about their debut album. After having an amazing conversation with both of them, I learned what their sound is and what is in store for 2011. Touring can be exhausting for them since they perform internationally, but Tritonal is back in Austin and ready for a crazy New Year’s after party at Republic Live.

Come to Republic Live for the New Year’s Eve after party with Tritonal on December 31, 2010! Get tickets today!

How did you guys come up with your name?

Chad: It was a long process, we actually went through like a million names. First of all, tritone in music is a chord and back in the 16th or 17th century when the Pope and the Church of England ruled in government, the songs they put out were happy. If you play that chord on a piano it has a dissonant kind of a sound. It’s a neat transfer chord between a sad and a happy place it can get back and forth between either one of those places really well. Back in those days it was known as the devil’s chord and they did not allow anyone to play that cord, I thought that was interesting.

Tritonal according to Wikipedia is a chemical, highly explosive compound. So when you put those together you have a musical element and also something that is very explosive and we just thought that is rockstar I mean what a cool name, right? That kinda fell into our lap, we were not necessarily going to choose something that had a meaning or not but we wanted something that was catchy. We thought Tritonal did all of those things and that’s how we came up with it. It took forever though we had tons of crazy names.

I read that you met in 2007 (or combined forces), can you tell me more about this?

Dave: Well I lived in Washington D.C. and Chad and I started talking. We got this synthasizer called the Virus T.I. and we both shared sound designs and songs we had made off of it. We like each others style like a lot to the point to where I was moving down here and he was working on a remix already, so we got together on that mix. It worked out well from what I recall.

Wow, so this was fate?

Ya, it's fate!

Favorite venue?

Chad: Vanguard in L.A. not so much because it was the best venue, but our first year working together and our first time to play as an act in front of such a massive audience. There was like 5,000 people, it was sold out I mean we were in L.A. To be flown out there and have our “cherry popped” so to speak was ridiculous.

Dave: I felt the connection in Waikiki, it was an intimate venue, line wrapped around the front and to see that was awesome. That was a big experience personally.

Favorite city?

Chad: I had a cool experience in Sidney, not because of the gig but I think mainly because of the city. On the next day of our Australian tour we were so jet lagged. We had played that night and we got done at like 2 am and I just popped up at 6 a.m. hadn’t slept at all, and saw that a massive race called City to Surf 2010 it was 80,000 Australians and I ended up in this 14K race. We ended at this beach, the whole run was along the coast…it was a ridiculously cool experience for me.

Dave: Scottsdale, that was really fun. To be honest when we were flying in, we were opening up for Above and Beyond that night, I thought it was going to be a small town. But the W hotel was amazing there were amazing rocks everywhere in the desert. It was this little village that was super cosmopolitan in the desert.

How would you describe your sound?

Chad: It has evolved. When we started we wanted to do that up in the air, uplifting trance. European trance we wanted to bring that to the U.S. We started playing all over these clubs and it didn’t work in all of the markets in the U.S. There is a time and a place for that to be successful. We still love it, but I would describe our sound now as big room progressively influenced tech trance almost, because we are playing bigger tracks that are simplified down to work really well in a club. Our sound is more like trance and electro fused together…melodic trance with a serious edge.

What drives you to create music?

Dave: Ya know, music in general drives us. When we hear a melody that totally takes us off our feet. For example, an orchestral piece, movies, television and video games. It’s walking down the street and hearing a truck or something that sounds harmonic and thinking that would be cool. We can get inspired musically anywhere from a movie to what we hear sitting on a bus.

Tritonal will be playing the New Year’s Eve after party at Republic Live this year, are you excited to be back in Austin?

Chad: Yes, so much! We live here, as a global act not only touring nationally, but also internationally we made a decision about a year ago to limit our gigs locally in Austin and also in Texas. We wanted to gain more global respect and bring that back to our hometown.

We love playing in Austin but sometimes there is that local syndrome when you play too often here, so we feel like our decision was good for us. We miss our Austin fans and our Austin base…we are excited to be at Republic Live! We are hoping to do a follow up with an album launch party in the next few months.

What do you have in store for the big party?

Chad: We have worked for the last year and a half on our debut album, and this party is a celebration of finishing our first album. It is 15 tracks solid front to back. New Year’s to us is going to be a celebration of our album and what’s to come in 2011.

What does your schedule look like in 2011?

Chad: Some cool stuff. We will be doing our album tour in the U.S. and internationally. Also, we are playing at Digital Society’s 4th Birthday at 02 Academy in Leeds, U.K. It will be a Tritonal album launch party…this is gonna be big time. Being flown into the U.K. to play as one of the co-headliners along with Ferry Corsten, Sied Van Riel and Menno De Jong is a big deal. The festival is February 25, 2011.

Anything you would like to tell your fans?

Chad & Dave: Thank you for all of the love and support we have been blessed to have fans that follow us and love us. Everything that we do, they are always following us. Thank you for all of the love and support.

The Halloween celebration started early at Republic Live. On Thursday Afrojack broke hearts and melted minds to create a landscape of sound for moving. The night peaked for me when Afrojack slowed radio tunes from Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pink Floyd with his ear for finding the space in-between the notes and expanding them into pure satisfaction.

Thanks Afrojack. Be sure to post some pictures from your gig in Dubia!

Friday night Republic Live and Hudson on 5th were invaded by over 1,000 fine students of Texas State with costumes revealing their inner-most desires: Shot in the Dark, talk about steamy. Staying true to his name, Fadi was a rhythmic savior with drum beats that brought the crowded dance floor even closer together. I’d like to know is what happened on the bus ride back to San Marcos. Well, maybe not.

After Shot in the Dark, Republic Live stayed opened until the sky turned from black to deep blue for the Seamless After-party. DJ KB kept the energy going as night became morning and we welcomed All Hallow’s Eve. At 3:00 a.m. caution was thrown to the wind and everyone got caught in what DJ KB calls his favorite part of mixing music: “when everyone is sharing the same heartbeat” and shaking at the same pace. One word: euphoric.

First tuning his fingers to the ivory keys as a child, DJ KB has transitioned into an amazing DJ with a unique sound. Support from family, friends and fans inspired him throughout his career. Getting into the DJ scene at the age of fifteen by teaching himself and watching others, DJ KB now plays all over Austin including a monthly show at Republic Live.

Come to WhET Wednesday at Republic Live on November 3rd to see DJ KB!

When did you decide you wanted to DJ?

I knew after seeing this movie called “Juice.” There was a DJ battle, and I had never seen anything like that before. That was the first time I had seen anyone use turntables like that and it totally sucked me in. Until then I hadn’t really thought of a turntable as an instrument.

While most of my friends spent their money and time working on cars, I would throw mine into buying records, tables and stuff, just collecting. I would watch videos on youtube and see how DJs incorporated different techniques to create all of these different sounds out of nothing.
Hip-hop was my foundation, it was initially what I wanted to get into. I wanted to learn how to scratch and juggle and do all of the different tricks that I would see other DJs that I looked up to do at their shows.

What has been your favorite show so far?

Anytime that I got to share a venue with an artist I really looked up to, those are the highlights of anything that I have done in my career.

I got to share a venue with DJ AM at Speakeasy’s Twelfth Year Anniversary Party right before he passed, he was a big influence on me that year. His style was so unique because he would find climaxes of different songs and basically break apart music to put new stuff together. It was an honor to be able to share a venue with him.

During South by Southwest, I was doing a show at Speakeasy, and The Cool Kids were there. Right around the last hour of my set they asked if they could jump on and we did a switch up and all threw down for about an hour…that was awesome!

What is your secret to get people to dance?

Basically what you have to do when you are working a crowd, you can’t get too lost in yourself and the music that only you want to play. Every crowd is different, every crowd has a different energy and you have to be able to look at them and read them, in a way almost stereotype them. You have to play a song and see how they react to that song and then know about three other songs that they would like to hear based on that initial reaction. I am constantly reevaluating the crowd, that is why when I do a set I don’t plan out the music but instead it’s improvisation from the start. The reason I do that is so I don’t get stuck on a set and I can switch gears according to their energy. You want to guide them, build the energy.

The best part about being a DJ is that during a set there are moments when everyone is on the same beat, it is like everyone is sharing a heartbeat. This is what connects us and brings us together.

Come to Seamless at Republic Live, an afterhours party starting at 2am on October 29th to hear DJ KB!

After finishing school at UT, what inspired you to stay in Austin?

I love this city. I think this is the coolest city in Texas by far. I love that it is a small city, but there is a lot going on. The nightlife over here is fantastic, and I like how close together everything is. Live music capital of the world, and I love music…there isn’t anywhere else I would rather be. I have had a lot of great opportunities here as far as being a DJ goes.

What do you call your music…mixing, spinning, playing?

Um, I juggle those words a lot. I will say “I’m doing a set, I’m doing a gig, dropping a mix…” it’s kind of evaluating the venue you are going to be at. If you are doing a club, then you are more vibing the crowd and setting the atmosphere. You have to know what the venue is looking for and what the crowd is looking for and you can adjust based on that.

How would you describe your sound?

My sound has changed a lot over the years. When I got started, I learned how to mix with hip-hop. That is what I wanted to start out with because I wanted to learn how to scratch. My taste in music changed as I went to different shows and was exposed to different things, then my style of mixing changed with it. Kind of like going with the times. I’m at the point now where I consider myself to be an open format DJ.

Who are your influences?

My style has changed with the different musical influences that have gone on through the years around me. I grew up in Dallas, so I got really into the rave scene over there that’s when the electronic music started really picking up. DJ AM was a really big influence on me in my career.

What motivates you to DJ?

I feel motivated through knowing that I am blessed to have the opportunity to do something that I love as my career. I have worked jobs that I hated and I would go home and DJ after my work day just for pleasure. To know that now I can do that for a living…that is what motivates me the most.
What is behind your stage name DJ KB (Kaivan Bazleh)? KindBud Productions?

They are my initials, and my family has called me KB since I was little. As I grew up and learned about some slang terms, I decided to go with Kind Bud Productions. More than anything else though, I can relate to the name KB since it is what everyone called me growing up … I feel at home with it, I feel connected to it.

You do a monthly event at Republic Live. What made you decide to do this?

I really like Republic Live as a venue, I think it’s one of the dopest venues in Austin. Basically, they are doing something that a lot of the other venues have not done, they are bringing the electronic scene to Austin and doing it properly. They have the lights, sound, and a quality venue that caters to that, the balance is important to set the overall vibe.

What would you like to say to your fans and followers out there?

Thank you so much for everything, I wouldn’t do this if y’all weren’t out there. The euphoria that we get is from the fans, sharing that moment with them during a set is a great experience. You have my heartfelt thanks!

With roots in rock, blues and country, it's hard to put a label on Sam Sliva and the Good. This Austin based band released its debut album, “See You Around”, in the summer of 2008. Being compared to the likes of the Killers, Steve Earle, and Robert Earl Keen, Sliva and his band lack nothing when it comes to style. The group continues to play shows almost nightly across Texas, and they play this Thursday, October 21, at Republic Live. Tickets are available here.

When it comes to the band and the upcoming show, Sam Sliva had a few things to tell the readers of The Downtown Deets.

When did you decide to start a band?

I made the decision to quit school and start playing music full time in 2006. Luckily, I had the support and confidence from my parents to do so!

What bands have been your inspirations through this journey?

I grew up riding around with my dad and listening to A LOT of classic rock. I can remember getting really excited when a Led Zeppelin or Tom Petty song would come on but I loved (and still love) it all.

When hanging out with my mom, we would always listen to the oldies station. The Beatles (of course) were always our favorite as well as countless other bands such as the Big Bopper and Fats Domino. I can also remember when they would have parties at the house and I would lie in my room trying to sleep to the blasting sounds of SRV, Don Henley and Bonnie Raitt. Bonnie was always my favorite out of the female artists!

Of course, today I continue to listen to all of these artists but have picked up a lot of favorites along the way. Some include Steve Earle, the Black Crowes, the Drive-By Truckers, Stone Temple Pilots, 311, Sublime, the Killers, Bob Marley and not to mention my country favorites from the 90's and late 80's. In my opinion, this is the best era of country music.

How would you best describe your band's style?

Our bands style has evolved from being more alternative/country to now what I like to call roots/reggae dirt rock. This is my term for a mixture of rock/blues/reggae and red dirt/Texas music.

Which band members do most of the song writing?

I write mostly all the lyrics and melodies for the songs, but it's a joint effort as far as the rest of the instrumentations go.

What inspired your band name “The Good”?

Now that is a long story… unfortunately it shall remain confidential.

You've played with some big stars, who was the most memorable?

One of the biggest shows was in KC, Missouri with Cross Canadian Ragweed, Randy Rogers and Stoney LaRue at the Red Dirt BBQ. There were like 3,000-5,000 people there and the energy was just awesome! One of those shows where you don't need any drugs or drinks to put on a great show.

We recently played a show with Jason Isbell (former Drive-By Trucker). We had him come down to record guitar and some vocals on our new record. That was very cool. He's a monster.

What has been your favorite venue or show in your career?

Some of our favorite venues would have to be the House of Blues in Dallas, the Glass Cactus in Grapevine, Stubb's BBQ in Austin and now REPUBLIC LIVE in Austin. We can't wait for the show on Thursday.

Where do you see your band in the next 5 years?

Wow, that’s a long time especially in the music industry! Who knows, hopefully still doing what we love to do and making the music we love to make… but with a lot more fans and money on our side.

I know the music industry has changed drastically. What has been your secret to success?

Well just hard work and staying at it. I am a firm believer that a great live show and good music will prevail also.

Anything you would like to add for other bands out there? Your fans?

Hmm, I have gotten in trouble for speaking my mind too much so I will just let our new record do the talking. As always, we would be nothing without our friends and fans. We would like to thank everyone who has stuck by us and supported us from the beginning. Oh, and thanks for being patient with us on the new record...it won't be long now!
